House Republicans also voted by secret ballot to appoint Rep. Steve Scalise (R-La.) as the chamber’s next majority whip, according to Politico.
The publication reports the appointments of McCarthy and Scalise were held Thursday afternoon and came after Cantor’s defeat in a primary election held last week.
âIâm going to continue to work with our leadership to bring forward good conservative ideas that unite us not only as a conference but address the problems facing our country,” Scalise told reporters.
“Iâve been working hard to build coalitions, to solve problems, to get our country back on track,” he added, according to Politico.
McCarthy won over Raul Labrador (R-Idaho), while Scalise beat Peter Roskam (R-Ill.) and Marlin Stutzman (R-Ind.) during the snap House election.
Politico reports that House Speaker John Boehner along with McCarthy and Scalise are scheduled to face a re-election vote after the midterm elections in November.
