Patrick said the capital investment for the Massachusetts Open Cloud Project builds on the stateâs desire to provide big data and cloud technology solutions and services to a growing number of companies.
âMassachusetts is already home to several unique big data assets,â he said.
âThrough continued investments and support for this growing industry we are positioning ourselves to take the lead on big data.â
The Massachusetts Open Cloud Project is a collaboration of five universities led by Boston University, with industry partners such as Cisco, Juniper, Red Hat, EMC, Dell, Intel and DataDirect Networks providing operational and technical support.
The governorâs announcement coincided with the release of the 2014 Mass Big Data Report, which forecasts 3,000 new jobs for the big data industry in the region over the next 12 months.
The report also highlights the growth prospects for big data-related talent, workforce and public data access and suggests priorities in education, training and other areas that Massachusetts could pursue to reinforce its competitiveness.
