Jason Miller writes the transformation began in 2010 when Former Secretary Ken Salazar streamlined the leadership structure within the Office of the Chief Information Officer.
Bernie Mazer now serves as the department’s CIO and leads DOI’s $35 million drive to modernize its email system.
“Now we are moving into the implementation phase and we are starting to see some tangible successes,” Mazer told the radio station.
The updates include a migration to the cloud, consolidation of data centers, deployment of a records and document management tool and network optimization.
âMore recently, we realigned IT components from the Interior Business Center to the OCIO,â Mazer said.
âThis has brought a lot of new skills, experience and capacity to the OCIO and this will help us in our approach in delivering department-wide IT through IT shared services organizations,” he added.
Moving forward, Mazer said Interiorâs goal is to maintain just six core data centers in all and strengthen its focus on cybersecurity and smarter sourcing processes.
