Gen. Mark Milley, commander of the U.S. Army Forces Command, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to succeed Gen. Ray Odierno as the military branch’s chief of staff, DoD News reported Wednesday.
DoD News reports U.S. Navy Adm. John Richardson, currently director of the Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program, has received a presidential nomination to replace Adm. Jonathan Greenert as chief of naval operations.
Both Milley and Richardson would also become Joint Chiefs of Staff members if Congress approves their appointments, according to the publication.
Milley led the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command and the U.S. Forces-Afghanistan before he took his current position.
The 34-year military veteran also worked as a military assistant to the defense secretary and had previous operational experience in the JCS.
Richardson has directed the Navy’s nuclear propulsion initiative since November 2012 and oversaw the Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine replacement program.
He began his naval career in 1982 and served as commanding officer on USS Honolulu, deputy commander of the U.S. 6th Fleet and chief of staff of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe as well as the U.S. Naval Forces Africa in Italy.
He also worked as a naval aide to the president, assistant deputy director of JSC’s regional operations and director of strategy and policy at the Joint Forces Command.
