WhiteHouseThe Senate voted 72-26 Thursday to approve a $1.1 trillion “omnibus” spending bill one day after the House passed the bill by a 359-67 vote, The Hill newspaper reported Thursday.

Pete Kasperowicz and Erik Wasson write that President Barack Obama will likely sign the legislation Saturday, when federal funding is scheduled to expire.

According to the report, this represents the first time Congress has moved through a full funding structure for the government.

Kasperowicz and Wasson have previously reported that the bill increases discretionary spending by $45 billion in an effort to mitigate some sequestration cuts.

Military Times reports the omnibus measure allocates a $572 billion base budget for the Defense Department with another $85 billion set aside for war funds.

The total base budget includes $63 billion for research and development, $4.5 billion less than the White House requested, according to John Bennett’s story.
