Terry Halvorsen, chief information officer at the U.S. Defense Department, spoke to the press about the status of the agency’s efforts to implement a common enterprise information technology infrastructure, DoD News reported Tuesday.
Cheryl Pellerin writes Halvorsen told a media roundtable event that he believes the adoption of a joint regional security stack is the first step for DoD toward the Joint Information Environment concept.
“What JRSS will do when we have it right is enable a central view of all of the data that is more commonly shared by all the levels where we want to share it, which is a lot,†he told reporters.
DoD News reports that another element of the JIE framework is a mobility program that would allow agency personnel to manage classified and unclassified workloads with protected smartphones.
Halvorsen told the press that the department has started to deploy dual-personal BlackBerry smartphones that DoD employees can use to access unclassified business information as well as personal emails and applications.
He added the agency is working on a modified version of a commercial Android phone for classified network use, according to Pellerin’s article.
