FBI Director Robert Mueller told a Senate Appropriations subcommittee that budget cuts from sequestration would force the bureau to furlough employees in fiscal 2014, Gov Exec reported Thursday.
According to the Eric Katz article, Mueller said the agency has taken all possible steps to avoid implementing unpaid leave.
Mueller testified at a subcommittee hearing Thursday, saying furloughs and spending cuts will hamper the FBIâs ability to protect national security.
âWe have two resources to cut,â he said. âOne is our people, which is a last resort.â
The FBI has undergone $550 million in automatic cuts in FY 2013 in addition to $150 million in cuts from 2013 appropriations.
The agency is scheduled to receive $700 million is sequester cuts in 2014.
Mueller said the other resource is the agency’s infrastructure which is âtremendously important to us but comes second to our people.”
