The U.S. Navy will start transporting five more patrol ships to Bahrain with three set to deploy this summer, Defense News reported Monday.

Mark Faram writes the Tempest, Squall and Thunderbolt are slated to deploy from the Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Fort Story, Va. this year and will operate in the Persian Gulf.

The Navy plans to send Hurricane and Monsoon to the region in 2014, according to the report.

Faram reports these additional coastal ships bring the Navy’s total number of coastal patrol ships in operation to 1.

Each ship will have permanent full-time crews after previously having unaccompanied, rotational crews.
