Senate Committee Approves Bill Seeking Cybersecurity Resources for SMEs

1 min read

The Senate Commerce Committee has passed a bill that would provide resources for small and medium companies to address cyber threats, Nextgov reported Wednesday.

Joseph Marks writes the committee approved the Making Available Information Now to Strengthen Trust and Resilience and Enhance Enterprise Technology Cybersecurity Act  through a voice vote Wednesday after Sen. Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii) completed amendments to the bill.

The MAIN STREET Cybersecurity Act would direct the National Institute of Standards and Technology to establish a set of “simplified and consistent” resources for SMEs based on NIST’s Cybersecurity Framework, Sen. John Thune’s (R-South Dakota) office said March 29.

NIST produced the framework in an effort to help public and private organizations manage and reduce cybersecurity risks.

Thune and Schatz sponsored the bill with fellow Sens. James Risch (R-Idaho), Maria Cantwell (D-Washington) and Bill Nelson (D-Florida).
