President Trump is talking with advisers regarding the administration’s potential purchase of Greenland for resources and geopolitical reasons, The Wall Street Journal reported Friday. A fraction of Trump’s advisers support the idea as a beneficial economic move, while some disagree with the president.

Some government officials say the autonomous Danish territory holds benefits to U.S. national security. The U.S. has access to Denmark-based military facilities such as Thule Air Base due to an old treaty between the two countries. However, Greenland’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Twitter that the territory is not for sale, but open for business with regard to tourism and resources.

The president’s idea of purchasing Greenland comes before his Denmark visit scheduled for next month.

Dan Coats, departing director of national intelligence and 2019 Wash100 Award winner, is calling on Congress to reauthorize provisions under the USA Freedom Act of 2015 which is slated to expire in December, The Hill reported Thursday. Coats wrote to the Senate judiciary and intelligence committees seeking permanent reauthorization for the act’s provisions which include the authority to wiretap calls and obtain business records for national security purposes. 

Coats’ letter comes after the National Security Agency suspended the White House’s phone surveillance program focused on obtaining data related to potential terrorist plots. NSA announced its recommendation to terminate the program in April. According to Coats, the government should exercise its authority to restart the surveillance effort as needed.

“However, as technology changes, our adversaries’ tradecraft and communications habits will continue to evolve and adapt,” he said. “In light of this dynamic environment, the Administration supports reauthorization of this provision as well.”

The First Responder Network Authority has published a roadmap that details public safety technology trends and operational needs for mobile broadband communications in the next five years. Built from industry and government feedback, the FirstNet Authority Roadmap contains six domains that represent key public safety operational functions, FirstNet said Monday.

The domains include voice communications, user experience, secure information exchange, situational awareness, network core, coverage and capacity. Additionally, FirstNet intends to facilitate potential network investments and prioritize activities and initiatives to equip first responders with communication capabilities in line with the roadmap.

“As we look to the future of FirstNet, it is critical that we deliver network enhancements and innovations based on the needs of public safety and in lock step with trends in technology,” said Edward Horowitz, chairman of the board at FirstNet.

The Energy Department is seeking input from industry to update the Cybersecurity Capability Maturity Model designed to help organizations assess their cybersecurity posture, Nextgov reported Wednesday. DOE last revised the model in 2014 and posted the draft of the latest version on the Federal Register.

The C2M2 framework was established in 2012 as an open-source model to help fortify the security of the elctric grid. DOE used its interviews with industry experts as well as best practices cited in the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s most recent cybersecurity framework to inform the development of the latest C2M2 iteration.

Interested parties may submit feedback on the new model through Sept. 13.

The U.S. Air Force’s 571st Aircraft Maintenance Squadron has concluded an effort to replace the wings of a certain close air support aircraft. The group installed 162 wing pairs on A-10 Thunderbolt II units at Hill Air Force Base for the A-10 Enhanced Wing Assembly replacement program’s final wave, Hill AFB said Saturday.

South Korea’s Osan Air Base installed the remaining 11 pairs, for a total of 173 under the program. The final installations end a program that began in 2011. The squadron had to use new fuselage parts and worked with the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group to gather other A-10 components.

“At the end of the program, making sure we had all the pieces and parts that we needed to make that happen required a really significant team effort,” said Stephen Zaiser, 571st AXMS director.

Boeing provides the replacement wings for the program under a $1.1B contract. The Air Force aims to keep the aircraft operational through the late 2030s, with new wings designed to function for up to 10K flight hours.

The U.S. Army is looking to develop a robotic combat vehicle originally developed for the U.S. Marine Corps in 2017, National Defense Magazine reported Wednesday. The Army plans to update the Marine Corps’ expeditionary modular autonomous vehicle and produce light, medium and heavy versions of the platform.

Col. Warren Sponsler, deputy director of the Army’s cross-functional team, said that the military branch is slated to conduct phase two of its development activities for the robotic vehicle during a National Defense Industrial Association event in Georgia.

According to Brian Barr, a program manager for the Army, the EMAV unmanned ground system has diesel-electric features and has a payload capacity of 7,200 pounds. He added that the Marine Corps is “continuing to experiment with it and they are reaching out to collaborate with Army customers to witness those experiments.”
