Boeing, Raytheon Among 11 Grantees of Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute

The Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing Institute will award up to $16.6 million in funding to 11 projects combining the efforts of the academe, industry and government.

The project teams involve companies such as Boeing, Raytheon Technologies and the latter organization’s subsidiary Collins Aerospace, the Department of Defense Manufacturing Technology Program announced Sunday.

Boeing, University of Southern California and 3M will focus on making ceramic matrix composite materials cost-effective, including finding a viable alternative to titanium for the production of components for hypersonic objects.

Raytheon Technologies Research Center will be the principal investigator in a team comprised of Carnegie Mellon University, Wason Technology and Collins Aerospace. They will apply robotic automation on ultrasonic welding of reinforced thermoplastic composites made of lightweight carbon fiber.

ARM is a public-private consortium created in 2017 by Carnegie Mellon University after obtaining a grant from the Department of Defense.

“The project teams epitomize the strength of the ARM Institute’s member ecosystem and the importance of bridging the gap between non-traditional collaborators,” said Chuck Brandt, ARM Institute chief technology officer.
