Rear Adm. David C. Johnson, program executive officer for submarines at the U.S. Navy, has been nominated by President Barack Obama to serve as principal military deputy to the assistant secretary of the Navy for research, development and acquisition.
Obama also recommended Johnson’s promotion to the rank of vice admiral in a Defense Department notice posted Thursday.
Breaking Defense reports Johnson will work with Sean Stackley — assistant navy secretary for research, development and acquisition — to oversee the branch’s nuclear aircraft carriers, Littoral Combat Ships and F-35C fighter jets.
Johnson previously served as deputy PEO for Ohio SSBN Replacement Program for more than two years.
He also worked at the Naval Sea Systems Command as deputy commander for undersea technology and commander of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.
From 2005 to 2008, he was program manager of the Virginia-class attack submarine and prior to that served as assistant program manager for USS Jimmy Carter, a Seawolf-class submarine.
