ONR Develops Cyber Tool for Shipboard Systems; Mathias Winter Comments

1 min read

cybersecurityThe Office of Naval Research has developed a cybersecurity tool that works to protect shipboard systems from viruses and similar attacks by controlling access to programmable logic controllers.

ONR said Sept. 18 the Resilient Hull, Mechanical, and Electrical Security system targets viruses rather than data theft and utilizes programming diversity to ensure attacks are limited to a single controller.

“In the event of a cyber attack, RHIMES makes it so that a different hack is required to exploit each controller,” noted Ryan Craven, a program officer at ONR.

“This technology will help the Navy protect its shipboard physical systems, but it may also have important applications to protecting our nation’s physical infrastructure,” said Rear Adm. Mathias Winter, chief of naval research.
