
The Mobile Communications Unit will be built to integrate into emergency response vehicles and allow first responders to transmit information while outside the terrestrial coverage of a national public safety broadband network, the FirstNet Office of the Chief Technology Officer said Monday.
The system would comprise of an in-vehicle router, a satellite modem and antenna, a local eNodeB architecture and an evolved packet core application.
FirstNet is also monitoring the 3rd Generation Partnership Project’s efforts to develop telecommunication standards to determine which 3GPP specifications could support the planned MCU technology.
