Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work has said he is “pretty certain” that Congress will consider a compromise on defense budget to lift the threat of fiscal 2016 sequestration, Defense News reported Monday.

Aaron Mehta writes Work told audience at a Rand Corp.-sponsored forum Monday he believes Democrat lawmakers have enough votes to support a White House veto for the defense authorization bill.

“The whole point of this is to try and encourage both sides of the aisle and both chambers of Congress to get together and do another Ryan Murray-type bipartisan budget agreement,” he was quoted as saying.

The Obama administration threatened to veto appropriations bills following the Republican party’s move to allocate extra war funds in an effort to circumvent defense spending limits, the report said.

The Hill newspaper reported Work estimates the Pentagon will receive about 60 percent of President Barack Obama’s proposed budget request for the next fiscal year if Congress addresses sequestration.

He also noted that international security threats could influence how the department will manage its future budgets, according to the publication.
