U.S. Army Secretary John McHugh will step down from his role by Nov. 1, 2015 after weeks of discussions with Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work.
“Secretary McHugh has been a tremendous public servant for decades, and he has helped lead the Army through a period of challenge and change,” Carter said in a statement released Monday.
McHugh was appointed Army secretary in September 2009 and is in charge of manpower and personnel, financial management, acquisitions, communications, reserve affairs and other Army matters.
He previously served nine terms as a representative of Northern and Central New York in Congress and advocated on behalf of several causes for soldiers and their families.
McHugh is a former ranking member of the House Armed Services Committee and chairman of its panel on morale, welfare and recreation and subcommittee on military personnel.
His other committee memberships included the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, House International Relations Committee and House Intelligence Committee.
McHugh was a long-time member of the United States Military Academy Board of Visitors and served as co-chair of the House Army Caucus.
