Shaun Donovan, director of the Office of Management and Budget, has instructed federal agencies to plan for a 5 percent reduction in their discretionary spending for fiscal year 2017, Federal News Radio reported Wednesday.

Jason Miller writes Donovan told federal agency leaders to use data from PortfolioStat, benchmark reports and internal management reviews when they make a budget plan for 2017.

He added OMB and other agencies should report all action items that will arise from their FedStat meetings about mission and management issues in their next budget submissions.

OMB also wants agencies to include strategies to manage real property assets and digital services as well as prevent improper payments.

The budget guidance also calls for the departments of Agriculture, Treasury, Transportation and Interior to study how they can improve their financial management offerings through the shared services program.
