1 min read

droneThe Justice Department has released a set of policy guidelines on the use of unmanned aircraft systems to support U.S. law enforcement and national security activities in the federal, state and local levels.

DOJ released the guidance Friday and said it supports similar initiatives of the Federal Aviation Administration and the “Promoting Economic Competitiveness While Safeguarding Privacy, Civil Rights, and Civil Liberties in Domestic Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems” presidential memorandum.

DOJ added it seeks continued policy management to ensure that its UAS policies are still applicable and strategically aligned with established requirements.

Component agencies are also required to submit an annual report to the deputy attorney general on their use of UAS, including privacy reviews and details on the number and type of missions flown.

A standing committee within DOJ will also conduct biannual reviews of policies, technology developments and regulatory changes, the department said.
