Alan Davidson, formerly vice president and director of New America’s Open Technology Institute, has joined the Commerce Department as digital economy director and senior adviser to the secretary of commerce.

He will be responsible for digital economy and Internet policy issues at the department, New America said Wednesday.

Kevin Bankston, formerly OTI’s policy director, succeeds Davidson as director of the OTI.

Davidson is also a former public policy director for the Americas region at Google, where he opened the search giant’s Washington office in 2005 and led policy and government relations efforts in North and South America.

Prior to Google, he served as associate director of the Center for Democracy and Technology and also has worked at Booz Allen Hamilton.
