House Homeland Security Committee members have unanimously passed a bill that would offer liability protection to businesses that share cyber threat information with the federal government, GovInfoSecurity reported Tuesday.
Eric Chabrow writes the National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement Act of 2015 will move on to the full House for final approval.
“Having strong liability protection is going to be absolutely critical and vital to the success of this bill, and the phraseology in this bill is absolutely critical and essential to that point,” said Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas).
Ratcliffe and House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Mike McCaul (R-Texas) introduced the legislation to also address privacy and civil liberties concerns related to exchange of threat data between agencies and companies, according to GovInfoSecurity.
Chabrow reports the House members plan to review both the National Cybersecurity Protection Advancement Act and House Intelligence Committee-approved Protecting Cyber Networks Act and could vote on information sharing legislation next week.
