Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has said the Pentagon’s efforts to build new military platforms will be key as the U.S. pursues a rebalancing strategy in the region, Defense News reported Monday.

Aaron Mehta writes Carter highlighted the U.S.’ foreign policy shift at a forum held Monday at Arizona State University, several hours before his four-day Asian trip.

He told audiences the Pentagon has also invested in long-range strike bombers, anti-ship cruise missiles and fighter jets to support U.S. military operations in the Pacific.

Carter will meet with Japanese and South Korean government officials this week as well as visit the U.S. Pacific Command’s headquarters in Honolulu, according to Defense News.

His trip to Japan and South Korea will focus on a trilateral data sharing initiative between the U.S. and the two Asian countries.
