Patrick Gallagher steps down as National Institute of Standards and Technology chief this week and Willie May will formally assume the acting director role with the standards body, FCW reported Thursday.

May has been occupying the post for Gallagher, who has been serving as acting deputy commerce secretary and is now set to leave government June 13, the report said.

May has been with NIST for more than 40 years and spent two decades as an analytical chemistry researcher.

He was most recently head of operations of all laboratory programs with the agency.
