spaceGavin Schmidt, formerly deputy director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, will take on the director role at the agency’s Earth climate research laboratory.

Schmidt will succeed James Hansen as director, NASA said Monday.

Ellen Stofan, NASA’s chief scientist, said Schmidt will lead the agency’s research institute “at a critical time for the U.S. and the world.”

Schmidt, a climate modeling veteran, joined GISS in 1996 with a focus on developing simulations for past, present and future climates.

He also worked to build computer models for ocean, atmosphere and land processes integration and compared the results with paleoclimatic data.
