SocialMediaThe American Red Cross has collaborated with Dell to open a new digital operations center in North Texas, where volunteers will work to engage the public during emergencies through social media.

Dell will provide computers, funds and professional services for the new social media listening and engagement center, as well as social analytics software for the American Red Cross’ health and safety preparedness programs, Dell said Thursday.

Trisa Thompson, vice president of corporate responsibility at Dell, said the company intends to help the organization further its humanitarian efforts across North Texas.

Dell also made the grant to help train 200 additional volunteers, who will join the American Red Cross North Texas’ digital volunteer program by 2015.

“Recent disasters have shown us that having a better view of the social conversation can help the Red Cross anticipate needs and connect more people with help,” said T.D. Smyers, CEO of American Red Cross North Texas region.

The American Red Cross will adapt the volunteer program into an online version to be rolled out across 10 chapters in the U.S.
