Alejandro Mayorkas: GSA, DHS Aim to Further Secure Laredo Port Facility With $61M Modernization Budget

laredo portThe General Services Administration and Department of Homeland Security will work to modernize and expand the Land Port of Entry in Laredo, Texas with $61.6 million in funding from Congress.

GSA said Tuesday that the budget for two out of four entry ports covers renovation work on the Convent Avenue POE facilities, as well as construction of vehicle inspection and other traveler service facilities at the Juarez-Lincoln POE.

Goals of the Laredo POE project include reducing traffic congestion with expanded space and upgrades to the facilities.

“One of the top priorities for this administration, and for the Department of Homeland Security, is to strengthen our border security while facilitating the lawful trade and travel essential to our economy,” said Alejandro Mayorkas, deputy homeland security secretary.

DHS plans to issue a request for proposals for construction work at Laredo in March and award a contract in August for work through July 2017, GSA said
