The U.S. Navy wants to analyze the business case for migrating to the Defense Information Systems Agency‘s cloud computing-based email service, Navy Chief Information Officer Terry Halvorsen has told Nextgov.

According to the story by Bob Brewin, Halvorsen told Nextgov the branch wants to understand cost, performance and security factors before it decides whether to transition its email system into the DISA infrastructure.

Defense Department CIO Teri Takai has asked component agencies to formulate plans for the cloud move by January 2014.

Brewin reports that the Navy and Marine Corps‘ information technology operations, including enterprise email, are currently managed under the Navy Marine Corps Intranet program.

The branches are slated to transition from NMCI to the Next Generation Enterprise Network starting in spring 2014, Brewin reports.
