Sen. Mark Warner Asks GAO to Assess the Fiscal Impact of the Gov’t Shutdown

1 min read

Mark WarnerSen. Mark Warner, D-Va., has called on the Government Accountability Office to examine the fiscal impact of the recently concluded partial government shutdown.

Warner asked GAO Comptroller General Gene Dodaro in an Oct. 24 letter to provide his office with full assessment report of the shutdown’s impact on the economy, federal workforce, agency operations and services, state and local governments, federal contractors, private-sector companies and revenues.

“As you know, Congress is working towards a comprehensive budget to strengthen the economy and prevent another crisis, but at the same time, I also think it is appropriate to review the consequences of the recent 16-day government shutdown,” Warner told Dodaro.

The Senate Budget Committee’s Government Performance Task Force chairman is seeking data about the costs of lost revenues and service delays.

“The best way to prevent another unnecessary shutdown is to better understand how this irresponsible action fully impacts our economy,” Warner said in his letter.
