Harry Reid: Govt Must Open Before Budget Talks Start

Capitol_BuildingSenate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said Tuesday that budget negotiations between Democrats and Republicans should not start until the government shutdown ends, Reuters reported Tuesday.

Richard Cowan and Kim Dixon write Reid made the remarks to reporters as Republican lawmakers sought to pass new measures that include financial support for retired soldiers and the Washington, D.C. city government.

“If they (Republican members of Congress) open the government, we’d be happy to go to conference with them; we’d be happy to consider those bills,” Reid told reporters, according to Reuters.

Republicans are pushing to restart certain government programs before starting negotiations on the rest of the government, according to Reuters.
