ChinaUSFlagsTop U.S. and Chinese defense officials met Monday in Beijing for annual talks focused on improving military cooperation between the two nations, the American Forces Press Service reported Tuesday.

Jim Garamone writes James Miller, defense policy undersecretary, told reporters that his meeting with Wang Guanzhong, deputy chief of general staff for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army, aimed to establish strategic trust and explore collaboration opportunities.

Officials discussed maritime security in China and exchanged views on nuclear policy, space, missile defense and cyber issues, according to AFPS.

Miller says he emphasized U.S. concerns over North Korea’s nuclear development during the talks, Garamone reports.

“We called on China to pressure North Korea to return to a process of credible and authentic negotiations aimed at denuclearization,” Miller added.
