Turkey has awarded China Precision Machinery Import and Export Corp. a contract to co-develop a $4 billion air and missile defense system, Reuters reported Thursday.

Ece Toksabay writes the state-run enterprise has been sanctioned by the U.S. government for violating international nuclear nonproliferation laws.

A Stockholm International Peace Research Institute report named China as the fifth-largest arms supplier in the world last year and Pakistan as the biggest buyer of Chinese-made weapons, according to Reuters.

Four systems were up for consideration in the competition, Toksabay reports.
