PentagonThe Defense Department is updating standards for its biometric screeening programs and expects to issue an updated directive by the end of this year, Federal Times reported Tuesday.

Nicole Blake Johnson writes the new policy will focus more on using information to make decisions about subjects and sharing data to the right people.

“Identity, not the capabilities used to establish it, is the critical component to enable decision making,” said John Boyd, Pentagon director of defense biometrics and forensics, according to the report.

Boyd cited budget constraints and decreasing overseas war operations as among factors driving the refined focus on biometrics.

He added the Pentagon believes the value of biometrics can be realized through intelligence analysis.

“Today’s challenge is satisfying the need for accuracy and timely information,” Dalton Jones of the Defense Intelligence Agency said, according to Federal Times
