SatelliteAirForceGPSTwo chairman of House Science, Space and Technology subcommittees are questioning the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration‘s plan to use data from two Chinese satellites to produce weather forecasts, FCW reported Friday.

Frank Konkel writes Environment Subcommittee Chairman Chris Stewart (R-Utah) asked NOAA officials in a hearing why they did not have other options to mitigate the potential loss of polar satellite coverage if the current generation of satellites fails before the next set starts to launch in 2017.

“Most of us are much more comfortable relying on commercial [services] over a foreign government,” Stewart told NOAA official Mary Kicza, according to the report.

“I have grave concerns about incorporating data into U.S. systems from a country well-known for persistent and malicious cyberattacks on our nation,” said Rep. Paul Broun, chairman of the Oversight Subcommittee, according to FCW.
