NIST Modernizes Government ID Security Standards for Mobile Devices

1 min read

NIST logo The National Institute of Standards and Technology has updated its security standards for managing the identity of federal employees using mobile devices, FedScoop reported Thursday.

Colby Hochmuth writes the new “Federal Information Processing Standard 201-2 Personal Identity Verification of Federal Employees and Contractors” includes mobile credential options that work to secure access to government networks.

Hildegard Ferraiolo, NIST computer scientist and FIPS 201-2 co-author, told the publication the new standard aims to stay updated with technology and enhance security across government infrastructure.

Federal employees and contractors use PIV cards to gain access to government computer systems, according to the report.

Hochmuth writes the standard requires biometric security measures and remote updating of a PIV card.

“The standard can be updated every five years, if needed and agencies wanted to incorporate their years of experience in a fresher revision,” Ferraiolo told FedScoop.

All agencies are expected to issue new PIV cards with the mandatory features required by the standard within the year.
