wind energyA federal report on renewable energy has identified several states as rising powerhouses for alternative sources of power that could rival fossil fuels, The Atlantic Cities reported Thursday.

Thomas Stackpole writes the National Renewable Energy Laboratory study assessed the western region’s renewable energy supply and demand and named California, Arizona and Nevada as the most likely candidates for solar energy.

NREL named Wyoming and New Mexico as a prime location for wind energy, Stackpole reports.

“Renewable energy development to date has mostly been in response to state mandates,” David Hurlbut, who co-authored the study, told the website.

“What this study does is look at where the most cost-effective yet untapped resources are likely to be when the last of these mandates culminates in 2025,” he added.

Arizona exports the majority of its solar energy and continues to build its solar industry with more projects in the pipeline, NREL found.
