Violent crime dropped significantly in 2010, according to FBI figures released Monday.

The FBI’s annual “Crime in the United States” report says the estimated volume of violent crimes in 2010 dropped 6 percent, the fourth consecutive year it has declined.

Robbery decreased the largest of all violent crimes, doing down 10 percent.

Property crimes also went down 2.7 percent in 2010. Motor vehicle theft had the largest decline of all property crimes at 7.4 percent.

“While this information is encouraging as a whole, when properly analyzed, these data also provide valuable insight into the nature and volume of crime in small and large communities alike,” FBI Director Robert Mueller said in a message.
