Steven VanRoekel

Former Microsoft executive Steven VanRoekel is the next federal chief information officer, the New York Times reports.

VanRoekel left Microsoft in 2009 to become managing director at the Federal Communications Commission and is currently on detail as an executive director at the Agency for International Development.

VanRoekel worked at Microsoft for 15 years, serving as senior director of Windows Server at the time of his departure from the company. He also served as director of web services and as a speech and strategy assistant to Microsoft’s founder Bill Gates.

VanRoekel will replace Vivek Kundra, the first ever federal CIO. Kundra will serve a joint fellowship at Harvard University this fall.
