Government agencies will have access to cloud-based technology with a simple download from the U.S. General Services Administration’s Apps.gov website.

GSA announced it would offer cloud-computing infrastructure-as-a-service offerings, including cloud storage, virtualization and web-hosting services on the cloud-computing applications website.

Federal Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra said the new cloud IaaS offerings “make sense” for both the government and for the public.

“Cloud-computing services help to deliver on this administration’s commitment to provide better value for the American taxpayer by making government more efficient,” he added.  “Cloud solutions not only help to lower the cost of government operations, they also drive innovation across government.”

GSA will award contracts to vendors specializing in cloud technology to develop these solutions, which will, in turn, be offered to federal, state and local governments through Apps.gov.

The new IaaS applications will offer a number of features, including:

  • On-demand self-service so agencies are only using what they need
  • Resource pooling for virtually unlimited storage
  • Real-time scaling of service and provisioning of virtual machines, storage, and bandwidth

The new cloud-infrastructure offerings may be a way for agencies to cut back on costs and increase efficiencies without spending money on existing infrastructure.

The IaaS vendors include:

  • Apptis Inc. with Amazon Web Services
  • AT&T
  • Eyak Tech LLC
  • General Dynamics Information Technology with Carpathia
  • Verizon Federal Inc.
